Unbearably bitter medicine

A recent IPO filing by Guizhentang Pharmaceutical, a Chinese firm that produces bear bile, has sparked protests from animal activists and the public.

Activists are crusading against the use of bear bile in traditional Chinese medicine, claiming that the extraction process is inhumane.

However, Guizhentang says bear farming prevents illegal poaching. They also claim that their extraction method, which involves implanting a tube in the bear’s abdomen, is painless.

As proof, Guizhentang invited reporters to tour their facilities. However, some claim it was all a sanitised show, with only healthy and heavily anesthetised bears on display.

The debate continues with strong arguments on both sides. Still, it’s hard not to feel sorry for the poor bears.
