The colours of Africa

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has urged leaders at the African Union Summit to respect gay rights.

Homosexuality is illegal in many African states and discrimination based on sexual orientation is often sanctioned by some governments.

No matter how homosexuality sits with you personally, it’s hard to justify repression of any kind. As Mr. Ban pointed out, the Arab Spring is a reminder that leaders must listen to their people.

“Events proved that repression is dead. Police power is no match to people power seeking dignity and justice.”

Well said, Mr. Ban. Well said.
