Penguin prison break

Zookeepers in Tokyo are on a frantic search for a penguin that pulled off an impossible escape.

The 1-year-old Humboldt penguin somehow managed to scale the sheer rock face of his enclosure, navigate out of the zoo, find his way to the river and swim iron-man style toward Tokyo Bay.

An official at the Tokyo Sea Life Park said they had struggled to recapture it because it swam “at a tremendous speed”. Efforts to find the winged fugitive are ongoing.

The little guy is impossibly far from his native South American habitat and would probably be safer back at the zoo (after all, he was born in captivity). Still we can’t help but root for him.

Swim free, my friend. At least for a little while.
