Passing gas

The largest solar storm in 5 years has struck the Earth early this morning. If you don’t know what a solar storm is, it’s basically magnetically charged gas that the sun occasionally releases when it’s feeling moody.

This solar wind can disrupt satellites, power grids and telecommunications. On the bright side, it also treats us to a stunning display of Northern and Southern lights.

Thankfully, the Earth’s magnetic “sheath” has largely protected us so far. But experts say there’s still a chance it could cause a stink.

There really isn’t much we can do when the sun feels cheeky. So let’s hope for the best. Meanwhile, relax and enjoy the light show.
