Nin hao, Obama!

The Chinese characters for ‘Occupy Obama’

President Obama’s Google+ page was inundated with hundreds of comments from users in China over the past few days, thanks to a glitch in China’s Internet censorship system.

Inexplicably, these Chinese users were drawn to Obama’s page in particular – leading some to dub the event as ‘Occupy Obama’.

But comments weren’t all in protest. Topics ranged from freedom of expression and human rights, to requests for US green cards and Obama’s campaign bumper stickers.

While this event was brief and confined to Google+, we think it’s an exchange that’s probably more genuine than what is often portrayed in both countries’ media.
