Marmageddon

New Zealanders are in a bit of a jam. A Marmite shortage has hit the nation and people are rushing to stockpile their favourite bread spread.

The factory that produces Marmite was damaged by an earthquake last year and will not resume production until July. Existing stocks will run out in weeks. A Marmite spokesperson has urged the public to ration their supplies.

Some enterprising stockpilers are even selling their supply, with one seller asking for $800 for a jar that normally sells for $4.

Sounds silly? Here’s food for thought: if your nation’s staple condiment suddenly disappeared, we bet you’d find it hard to swallow, too.
