Mad dogs and angry swarms

A group of Hong Kongers launched a newspaper ad that refers to Mainland Chinese as locusts. The ad protests the influx of Mainland mothers who come to the city to give birth so their children may live in Hong Kong.

The issue at hand is resources. Many Hong Kongers feel that Mainlanders are straining the city’s healthcare and education systems – eating away at their children’s future.

Escalating tension over the past few weeks have stirred up many publicised incidents, including an Internet video of a man berating a Mainland child for eating on a train, and a Beijing professor calling Hong Kongers dogs on television.

But the real pestilence isn’t coming from across the border. It’s the hatred that’s invading minds and darkening hearts.

There are better ways to resolve things. Let’s end the ignorance now.
