Did you say ‘Elephant’?

If you thought E is for elephant, you wouldn’t be alone.

This majestic creature has so captured our collective imagination that it would be hard to imagine someone who doesn’t know what it is. Sadly, for one species of elephant, the E could soon stand for extinction.

The World Wildlife Fund has warned that the Sumatran Elephant – 1 of 3 species of Asian elephants – could be extinct in less than 30 years.

The Sumatran Elephant, found only on the island of Sumatra and with only about 2,400 individuals left, has lost 70% of its habitat. The International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species now lists it as ‘critically endangered’.

While human expansion will advance, we must be careful that our actions do not cause harm.

They say elephants never forget. Let’s hope they aren’t forgotten.
