Deus Ex Machina
In a dramatic last-minute miracle, Hong Kong’s legendary Sunbeam Theatre has been saved from closure after a mysterious man and a playwriting feng shui master intervened.
The Sunbeam, known for 40 years as ‘Hong Kong’s Grand Palace for Cantonese Opera’, was to be turned into a shopping centre after this Sunday’s performance. The issue at hand is skyrocketing rent, which has tripled in recent years.
However, a mysterious man known only as “Mr Leung” convinced the landlord to sit with Li to discuss a proposal. In the end, the landlord agreed to renew the lease for HK$1 million a month (US$129,000) for the next 4 years.
So for now, tears of sorrow have turned to joy. But what will the next act bring for Hong Kong’s last dedicated Cantonese opera theatre?
