The taxman wants a taste

Here’s a piece of news that many find hard to swallow. The British government wants to tax sausage rolls and other popular baked items when served hot.

The government announced that it will close a loophole that allows some fresh-baked takeaway foods – including sausage rolls, pies, Cornish pastries, among others – to escape sales tax.

Critics call this an attack on the working class by the Conservative government – the latest in a class war in which austerity measures take a bite out of the poor while cutting taxes for the rich and for corporations.

Surely, there’s a better way to fix the nation’s finances without leaving the working man with nothing but crumbs.

All this reminds us of a famous Beatle’s song:

“Don’t ask me what I want it for
If you don’t want to pay some more
‘Cause I’m the taxman.”
