Glowing ocean

Officials in Japan say that about 12 tonnes of radioactive water has leaked into the Pacific Ocean from Japan’s crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

This is the latest of several leaks, contradicting the government’s claim that the Fukushima reactors were now under control. Last month, officials said 80 litres seeped into the ocean.

The area around the plant remains off-limits and will probably be uninhabitable for three decades.

Sadly, this may not be the last of the contamination troubles facing Japan – further fuelling the debate on the merits of nuclear power.
