Burma’s long road to democracy

Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy party has won by a landslide in by-elections, winning 44 of the 45 contested seats.

Although critics have complained about fraud and irregularities in the election, support and turnout was unprecedented.

More impressive was the fact that Aung San Suu Kyi has spent over 15 years under house arrest.

Although the current ruling party will still hold about 80% of the seats, recent reforms are encouraging signs of change for the better.

We wish the people of Burma all the best on their road to democracy.
